Media Fellows Cook Up Community at Pizzeria Uno

What do you get when you combine the ingredients for a deep-dish pizza with more than two dozen bright, young ºÚÁÏÍø students?
A recipe for a fun adventure.
The inaugural class of School of Communication Media Fellows recently visited the legendary Pizzeria Uno in Chicago to take a deep-dish pizza-making class.
The 27 freshmen, under the guidance of the Uno staff, learned how to make their own individual deep-dish pizzas, topping bread dough with ingredients such as cheese, pepperoni, veggies and tomato sauce. The students then enjoyed the fruits of their efforts by eating the finish product fresh from the oven.

Media Fellows bond over pizza making class at Pizzeria Uno, taking community-building form the classroom to the community.
The pizza-making class was a fun team-building event for the Media Fellows, a select group of SOC freshmen who will spend the next four years taking classes together and participating in special events and activities, community engagement and service projects.
This is the first class of Media Fellows, incoming freshmen selected for their academic performance, extracurricular accomplishments and their creativity. As they embark on their journey at ºÚÁÏÍø, they will experience other activities and will have an opportunity to receive funding for internships and travel.
Perhaps it was fitting that the first Media Fellows outing was to Pizzeria Uno. Uno, after all, takes credit for creating the world’s first deep-dish pizza in 1943. The Media Fellows tasted their own slice of a Chicago legend through the pizza-making class.
I really appreciated the casual atmosphere. It made it easier to open up and get to know my Media Fellow peers. I definitely feel more connected now. Irelan Kopsch, Freshman in Multimedia Journalism
“I enjoyed learning about the history of deep-dish pizza, as well as getting to spend time with the other Media Fellows all while doing a fun activity to bring everyone together,” said Jonathan Pierce, a freshman Advertising and Public Relations major. “The workshop was really fun and delicious.”
Irelan Kopsch, a freshman Multimedia Journalism major, thought the class was a great team-building activity.
“I really appreciated the casual atmosphere. It made it easier to open up and get to know my Media Fellow peers. I definitely feel more connected now,” Kopsch said. For more information about the Media Fellows program, please visit this site: SOC Media Fellows.
